081 Meanwhile, everybody hid under the table
Joint exhibition Malgorzata Maria Olchowska and York Bing Oh in gallery Radar 20a in Gent, 2025
Exhibition text:
"An experiment with remnants. Moments once captured - photographed, observed - then gone. Working separately, this exhibition places our works side by side, juxtaposing images and objects. Our individual pieces sometimes merge, overlap, and interact in this proximity.
Sometimes, a piece of work is in the foreground, sometimes in the background. Sometimes, the front side is seen, sometimes the backside. This is how we see things - always in relation to the other. It is an attempt to examine our works from different perspectives, seeking new connections and exploring themes of collaboration, transformation and reinterpretation."
The title of exhibition "Meanwhile, everybody hid under the table" is from To the Lake by Kapka Kassabova
One can see the table as a shelter for protection in precarious situations. One can also read it rather naively, seeing the table as an object of play. This multiple reading is what we are trying to do in this exhibition with a collection of works juxtaposed and composed upon each other in the gallery space. The gallery space being part of the house (of the gallery owner), the spatial quality of this space is also ambiguous.
The horizontal surfaces of the tables and shelves are suspended in mid-air, sometimes turned perpendicularly, freed from the functionality of surfaces of utility. Together with the vertical elements (the stacked stools and the totem) they formed a constellation of objects and installations. These “furnitures” organised the space, serving as foreground and sometimes background to the works of Malgorzata. The installations try to convey a non-static reading of furnitures, inviting the visitors to see them from a different perspectives and to feel their presence in space.
